- Claims for compensation from Great Britain for damages inflicted upon American shipping and property by the Alabama, a ship of the Confederate States, which was built in Great Britain. The claims were heard by a tribunal of arbitrators and allowed in a sum somewhat in excess of $16,000,000. The award is known as the Geneva Award and the board of arbitrators as the Geneva Convention. Similar claims for damages from depredations by the ships, Florida and Shenandoah, were also arbitrated.
